ABOUT

I'm Berry Kruijning, founder and principal of Crowning Communications LLC. I am a conflict resolution professional based in Portland, Oregon with clients throughout the United States. I am passionate about guiding people through the process of untangling conflict, either as a coach, mediator, trainer or consultant. I have a deep belief that conflict is a good thing when handled skillfully and when people are open to an approach that emphasizes self awareness, confidence and building healthy relationships.

Education and Experience

Since 2004 I have been coaching people through their process. In 2007 I was introduced to the field of alternative dispute resolution and with my educational back ground in law and coaching and my 15 + years of international Human Resources experience in profit and non-profit sectors, all the pieces of my work puzzle fell nicely together. After completing mediation training and conflict coaching training, I immersed myself in the conflict resolution field and the exciting new field of conflict coaching.

I offer my clients a unique set of analytical and people skills based on my legal and Human Resources background. I have a good sense of intercultural communication and relationships due to my personal intercultural experience. Having lived and worked in different cultures gave me an understanding and appreciation of communication challenges in interpersonal and intercultural relationships.

Professional Associations

I like to stay busy and love to give back to the community. I am an active member of the Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA), a 1000-member association where I am serving my second year on the board as Secretary.
In addition to my board position, I am a member of The Society of Human Resources Managers (SHRM), The North West Coaches Association (NWCA) and The International Coach Federation (ICF).
As an active member of The Oregon Mediation Association I serve on the Annual Conference Committee.
The best volunteer job is, however, being a Community Mediator in the Beaverton Dispute Resolution Program, where I help community members (neighbors, home owners associations, landlords, tenants etc.) talk with each other in a constructive way and negotiate mutually agreeable solutions to their problems.

Coach-Mentoring and Training

In addition to the work in my private practice, I assist as a coach-mentor during conflict coaching workshops throughout the US and Canada. During these workshops I coach and mentor mediators, social workers, ombudsman and HR professionals in their learning process to apply the same seven-step conflict coaching model that I use in my practice.
I love to speak and train groups of people. My experience and comfort in that comes from years of speaking and training groups of employees on benefits, safety, conflict communication skills and other employment related topics. In the Fall of 2009, I am scheduled to work with Portland Community College as an instructor in Conflict Dynamics in their professional enhancement program.

Personal Interests

I chose beautiful Portland, Oregon as my home after having lived in The Netherlands for 30 years. I am passionate about the outdoors and go on many wilderness hikes with my family and friends. I am a competitive sailor on the Columbia River and an avid downhill skier on Mt. Hood slopes and beyond. At home I sometimes have to use my conflict resolution skills with my two, overall well-balanced, teenage children.
